E-bikes play an important role as a sustainable and active mode of transport in our community.
As e-bikes become more popular it's important that riders follow the road rules, wear suitable safety gear and ride responsibly to keep themselves and everyone else safe.
E-bike riders must follow the same rules as other bike riders.
This means:
- You can ride an e-bike on shared paths, bike paths and roads
- If you're under 16 years of age, or an adult supervising someone under 16 years of age, you're allowed to ride on the footpath in NSW.

Council's role
We work with Transport for NSW to educate our community about road and bike safety. We also look after many parts of Wollongong's cycling network, including signage to help riders and other road and path users.
It's important to note that NSW Police enforce the rules about e-bikes, including illegal or inappropriate e-bike use.
Hey rider...
Slow down Slow to walking pace when other people are around.

E-bike education resources
Use the button below to find resources and education tools to encourage safe behaviours when buying, riding, charging, and recycling e-bikes in NSW.
Which e-bikes are legal?
To be legal, e-bikes must be mostly propelled by riders - a motor can't be the only source of power and should only help riders, like when going uphill.
Make sure your e-bike complies with the law. Visit Transport for NSW's E-bikes page to learn more.
