On Thursday 2 November 2023, Wollongong City Council recognised the late Councillor Vicky King with a commemorative ceremony and tree planting at Hooka Point in Berkeley.

Working together with Councillor King’s family and local community members, 1000 trees were planted in her memory. The commemoration acknowledges Councillor King’s lifelong dedication to the community and her 19 years of service as a Wollongong Councillor.

A small sign has been installed at the site so that people using the space can learn more about Councillor King, her legacy and contribution to the City of Wollongong.

“Councillor King served as a Wollongong City Councillor for a total of 19 years, between 1987 to 2004 and then from 2017 to 2020, including serving as Deputy Lord Mayor. That alone is an incredible achievement and gift to the City of Wollongong,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“At the same time, she is remembered as a strong and passionate advocate for our city, with a strong focus on supporting our southern suburbs. Her dedication to the community never waned and Councillor King is recognised as a community leader whose support touched many people and organisations.

“Through her work as a Wollongong City Councillor, she served and represented the constituents of Wollongong on more than 13 community organisations including the Aboriginal Reference Group, Lake Illawarra Authority, and the Illawarra Housing Trust.

“Today, as we planted trees in her memory, we remember Councillor King and her commitment to the City of Wollongong. To her colleagues, friends and family who still feel her loss, we offer our condolences and deep sympathies.”

The dedication tree planting at Hooka Point in Berkeley will be followed by an avenue of trees and interpretive signage in West Dapto at a later date.
