Beaches closed until conditions ease

The majority of Wollongong’s patrolled beaches will be closed today until surf conditions ease.

Wollongong City Council Lifeguards are monitoring conditions at individual beaches, considering tides and swell size.

Most of our beaches have experienced some coastal erosion as a result of large swells and high tides.

North Beach has been reduced from approximately 50 metres wide to about 25 metres wide at high tide.

Council Lifeguards and our Cityworks teams are also cleaning up debris on our shores.

Puckey’s Beach requires a major clean-up as a result of stormwater and rubbish being flushed from Fairy Creek.

“Given the hazardous sea conditions and debris present on beaches we strongly encourage people to only swim where Lifeguards have erected the red and yellow flags” Beach Services Operations Manager Paul Dreghorn said.

Three saltwater pools have also been affected by the wild weather. The Continental Pool and Thirroul Pool are both closed due to the sea conditions and the storm water impacting on water quality.

Port Kembla Pool also remains closed – the reinstallation of the temporary intake pipe has been delayed as Council staff consider current and forecast conditions.

These pools are being continually monitored and will be reopened as soon as practically possible. All other pools remain open and are operating as normal.
