Feel-good Foster Story: Skip and her kittens

In May 2024, one of our Animal Compliance Officers, Bec, was called out to a job where she made a heartbreaking discovery—Skip, a young mother cat less than one year old herself, had given birth to five kittens in a skip bin.

The kittens, which were later affectionately named Bingo, Mondi, Tommy, Oskar, and Smokey by Bec, were just five days old when they were found, and their chances of survival without proper care were slim. Fortunately, Bec, a qualified vet nurse, knew exactly what to do. Without hesitation, she brought Skip and her tiny kittens into her home and began the round-the-clock care they so desperately needed.

Caring for such young kittens is no easy task. They require constant feeding and warmth, and without the right nutrition and care, their survival is at risk. Bec’s knowledge and dedication as a foster carer made all the difference. She ensured that Skip had everything she needed to care for her babies, and her loving support helped all five kittens grow healthy and strong.

For the months to follow, Bec’s home was filled with the playful pitter-patter of little paws and the comforting sight of Skip lovingly nursing her babies. Bec’s three-year-old son also played an important role in the kittens’ journey—he fell completely in love with Tommy, one of the kittens, and the bond they formed was undeniable. When the time came for the kittens and Skip to find their forever homes, Bec made the heartwarming decision to keep Tommy as a part of her family.

Thanks to Bec’s tireless efforts, all five kittens not only survived but thrived. As they grew older, each one developed their own unique personality, and it wasn’t long before they all found loving homes. Even Skip, the resilient mother who had been through so much, was adopted into a home where she could be cared for and adored.

This story is a testament to the power of love, dedication, and expert care. Bec’s commitment to fostering saved the lives of six beautiful cats, and her decision to keep Tommy ensured that part of this incredible journey will stay with her family forever.

Skip and her kittens now have a second chance at life, all thanks to the compassion and hard work of one extraordinary foster carer.
