"Embrace what makes you different"
I volunteer at Headspace, it makes me feel like I’m making a difference. I like hiking and spending time with my sister and the kids. It’s fun being an uncle.
When I was first diagnosed with autism, I was angry because it meant I was going to be different for the rest of my life and not normal. I’ve never felt like
I fitted in but now I don’t really care.
My autism affects me with communication and eye contact. Sometimes I have difficulty with understanding people and their behaviours. Car lights or even having someone brush up against me can overload my senses and make me feel like I’m having a panic attack. But I have learned to slow things down and shut things out.
I’ve had people treat me like I don’t know what I am talking about. I want to be treated like an adult and not talked to like a child. Treat people with kindness and educate yourselves about how disabilities work…you have Google.
