Spray Sealing

Spray sealing is a very effective maintenance treatment that can add another 10 years onto the life of a road.

This is the best treatment to seal and waterproof the road surface where there is some surface cracking in the road but the underlying pavement layers are in good condition.

Steps for spray sealing

  1. Sticky bitumen is sprayed onto the road surface.
  2. Loose stone is spread on top and rolled into the bitumen to form a new seal on the road. This is often done in less than a day.
  3. Two sweeps will be scheduled in the weeks after the spray seal to help remove most of the loose stone.
  4. Regular inspections will be done, and more street sweeping can be arranged if needed.
  5. Traffic driving on the road helps to settle the new surface, and over time the road will feel smoother.

What to expect

  • You'll get a notice in your letterbox shortly before a spray seal. This will tell you when work will be done, any scheduled sweep dates and other key information.
  • The night before work starts, you'll need to move all vehicles off the road. This includes cars, boats, campervans and trailers.
  • Access to properties will be restricted while work is happening. We recommend parking on a nearby street the night before and walking to or from your car.
  • There'll be heavy equipment in your street during works.
  • This process can be messy, and we know the loose rocks can be annoying for a little while.
  • After the work, please drive slowly and carefully on the road. This will help prevent loose stones damaging your vehicle.
  • We recommend you avoid walking on the newly sprayed road for the first few days, so you don't track marks into your car or home.

Bad weather

When it rains, we can’t complete our roadworks. Sometimes we need to delay our program because of weather, but we will always reschedule works for another date.

Traffic control, detours and delays

All roadwork is done with the support of traffic control. This may be ‘stop/slow’ arrangements or detours and road closures.

Please pay attention to signs and follow instructions. Depending on the type of work being completed we may or may not be able to allow vehicle access to properties.

Our traffic control will always allow access for emergency services, so please don't worry about this.

If your street is on a bus route, we work with the bus company to minimise delays.

We'll also work to allow access for your kerbside bins to be collected.
