Last update: 22 August 2025

We're moving forward on plans to improve and refurbish Helensburgh Pool.

The work is scheduled to be completed before the January 2026 summer peak and will provide an improved swimming experience for all users, including those with accessibility requirements.

Keep reading to find out more about what works will take place, or stay up to date with project updates as we work through these upgrades.

What works are being completed?

The works scheduled as part of this project will extend the life of the existing pool by another 30 years and more, as well as improve its accessibility for all members of the community.

The planned works are informed by community consultation. The project includes:

  • complete refurbishment of the male and female amenities including new partitions and fixtures,
  • construction of a new changing places toilet with 24/7 access and other accessibility upgrades,
  • construction of a new accessible toilet and parking spaces,
  • resurfacing the pool concourse,
  • installation of new handrails, seating, shade and bike racks,
  • improvements to pool concourse lighting,
  • the existing shade structure will be painted, and new shade cloth will be installed,
  • refurbishing the existing pool plant room. and
  • replacing the ageing pool plant and equipment.

The works on the pool are supported by grant funding from the NSW Government’s Multi Sport Community Facility Fund.

Project updates

The internal fixtures within the pool amenities have been removed and we are now taking on some of the heavier demolition work including the removal of internal walls and floor tiles.

Soon, we will start on external demolition to allow for the construction of accessible amenities, new accessible pathways and an enhanced entrance to the facility.

Progress continues on the plant room upgrades which will see upgraded equipment and chemical dosing systems, improving performance and water quality in the revamped pool.

Work has started this week on plans to improve and refurbish Helensburgh Pool. The fences have gone up at the site and demolition of the partition walls within amenities has begun.

Next week, this work will continue within the amenities building and the focus will also shift to the next steps for plant room improvements.

Site fences will go up around the part of the car park at Helensburgh Pool and tradespeople will start work in August as Wollongong City Council moves forward on the popular facility.

The remainder of the car park will still be available.
