Lean Mix Concrete

We use lean mix concrete to rebuild the full depth of a road when we can't improve it with stabilisation or asphalt works.

Lean mix concrete provides a foundation that's high-quality, durable and safe. It's more watery than regular concrete and creates a strong, level foundation on top of an uneven surface. It's often used as the base for road renewals where there are poor ground conditions due to ground moisture or movement.

Steps for lean mix concrete work

  1. We start by digging out the previous section of road. This stage may look like the image below:

  2. The old road material is taken away for recycling.
  3. Lean mix concrete is poured and spread by an excavator and the workers.
  4. The concrete is left to harden for around 48 hours. If we're doing a whole street, it could take a week or two to finish the work.
  5. After the lean mix concrete has hardened, we put down a new asphalt road surface.
  6. Any line marking will be done, usually at night, after the asphalt is in place.

What to expect

  • A letter will be dropped in your mailbox shortly before work starts. This will let you know the dates for work and any other important things you need to know.
  • You'll need to move all vehicles, including cars, boats and caravans, off the road the night before work starts.
  • During works there'll be heavy machinery on-site. You may hear reversing beeps as this machinery moves around.
  • After the concrete has been poured, all traffic needs to stay off it while it cures.
  • When it has cured, you will be able to drive on the concrete. Please drive carefully and mind the step between the road surface and the kerb.
  • We try to get asphalt on the surface as soon as we can, but sometimes there can be a delay.

Bad weather

When it rains, we can’t complete our roadworks. Sometimes we need to delay our program because of weather, but we will always reschedule works for another date.

Traffic control, detours and delays

All roadwork is done with the support of traffic control. This may be ‘stop/slow’ arrangements or detours and road closures.

Please pay attention to signs and follow instructions. Depending on the type of work being completed we may or may not be able to allow vehicle access to properties.

Our traffic control will always allow access for emergency services, so please don't worry about this.

If your street is on a bus route, we work with the bus company to minimise delays.

We'll also work to allow access for your kerbside bins to be collected.
