Wollongong City Catchment
The Wollongong City Catchment area includes Wollongong, Mangerton, Coniston and Mount Saint Thomas.
The Central Area Floodplain Committee provides advice to Council about issues in the Wollongong City Catchment area.
A Flood Study for this catchment was completed in 2013. This was followed by a Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan in 2015. When Council's blockage policy changed in 2016, a review of the study was undertaken and was completed in 2019. You can view the current 2019 Flood Study and the 2015 Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan. The 2013 Flood Study is also still available.
Planning matrix
We’ve added a matrix for the Wollongong City Catchment into Chapter E13 of the Wollongong Development Control Plan PDF, 1824.81 KB. This helps people understand flood risks when they’re planning new development in the area.
Swan Street culvert works
Culverts on Swan Street, Wollongong, near Kembla Street, have been upgraded to make them easier to maintain and reduce the chance of blockage.
Swan Street Swale Extension
The existing swale in JJ Kelly Park was extended by Council in 2018. This swale extension helps flood waters in Swan Street drain to JJ Kelly Park in very frequent events.
Vale Street and Gladstone Avenue stormwater inlet
We’ve made detailed designs to create an additional stormwater inlet at Vale Street and Gladstone Avenue, Mount Saint Thomas. This should reduce blockage and create better drainage. Construction is expected to start shortly.
Gurungaty Causeway
The lowering of the Gurungaty causeway is now complete. The works were completed in July 2019. Check out the Concept Design Report.
JJ Kelly Park
Investigations into work on JJ Kelly Park to improve the flow of water over the land are now complete. The feasibility study recommends no works be done in this location as the cost to do the works was significantly higher than the benefit the works would provide.
Allan Street Debris Control Structure
After intensive investigations into this option the project to design and construct a Debris Control Structure at the culvert inlet at 6 Allan Street was cancelled based on the lack of a feasible option for construction.
