Towradgi Point
In 2021, Wollongong City Council started work on a new footpath along Towradgi Point. The purpose of this project was to repair the old footpath as it had reached the end of its life and needed to be replaced.
During excavation of the site, Aboriginal cultural heritage items were identified. Council paused work and installed temporary fencing so that the appropriate next steps could be taken.
This process can take some time to complete as Council needed to work with key stakeholders, including members of the Aboriginal community, the Department of Planning and Environment, and Heritage NSW. We’ve since obtained the necessary approvals including an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP). We have now addressed the necessary conditions and requirements, to continue with work at this location.
We understand that our community is curious about this project and the artefacts discovered. It would not be appropriate for Council to comment on behalf of the Aboriginal community. That includes sharing specific details on what was found. It’s up to the local Aboriginal Community to decide what cultural information they would like to share with our broader community. That said, we can confirm that we did not find any human remains.
We expect that works on the footpath will be finished by the end of September 2023, weather permitting.
We will work with the Aboriginal community representatives, the Department of Planning and Environment, and Heritage NSW to decide what we do with the objects found in the long-term.

We thank the community for their patience and understanding and look forward to having this area reopened ahead of the busy summer period.
