Tsunamis are not common in New South Wales. However, because Wollongong is in a coastal area, we need to be ready for the possibility of a tsunami.
Tsunami emergencies are managed by the NSW State Emergency Service (SES).
The SES website has information to help you prepare and respond if a tsunami happens.
Council's lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers may also provide support. If they're on duty, they will direct people to leave the beach if a tsunami warning is issued.
Please make sure you follow the directions of emergency services, lifeguards and lifesavers.
NSW Tsunami emergency sub plan
The NSW Tsunami emergency sub plan sets out the preparation, response and initial recovery coordination arrangements for tsunamis.
