Greener Streets Planting Program

We're offering eligible residents free native street trees and verge planting on the public strip outside their homes.

Our Greener Streets - Street Tree and Verge Planting Program is helping make our neighbourhoods cooler, greener and more liveable by increasing tree canopy in areas that need it most.

Our current program focuses on planting in the following suburbs:

  • Warrawong
  • Port Kembla
  • Primbee

This project is part of a broader range of urban greening initiatives funded under the NSW Government’s Greening Our Cities grant.

Some streets across Wollongong have limited tree cover, which can lead to hotter conditions, less shade and fewer habitats for wildlife.

The Greener Streets Program aims to improve these areas by:

  • Planting new street trees
  • Adding small native gardens to road verges
  • Increasing shade, greenery and biodiversity

All approved planting will be Australian native species to suit the local conditions and available space.

This program is proudly funded by the NSW Government and Wollongong City Council.

We're focusing on Warrawong, Port Kembla and Primbee, as we have identified these suburbs as having low tree canopy and limited shade.

To be considered for the program:

  • Your property must be located in an eligible suburb (Warrawong, Port Kembla or Primbee)
  • Your verge must be suitable for planting
  • Planting must be possible within available space and funding

If your property is suitable and eligible, you may receive:

  • A small native verge garden (approximately 3–5m²), designed and planted in line with Council's Verge Garden Guidelines. Please note, verge planting includes plants and mulch only. Hard landscaping such as garden edging, borders, retaining walls or decorative features, is not included.
  • One or two new street trees (where space allows).
  • Simple advice to help you care for your new plants.

All eligible applications will be reviewed by Council, with each property assessed on a case‑by‑case basis. Priority will be given to properties that are suitable for both a street tree and verge planting.

Please note, submitting an application does not guarantee planting. Not all verges will be suitable, and works are subject to available space and plant supply.

  • All eligible applications will be reviewed by Council, with each property assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.
  • Residents will be contacted once assessments have been completed.
  • If successful, Council will come and do the planting for you - whether that's a new tree, verge garden, or in some cases, both! This may take some time as we usually plant in autumn and spring when the trees and plants have the best chance to thrive. Timing also depends on our ability to source different tree and plant species.
  • We ask you to please care for your tree and verge garden, give it plenty of water while it settles in, and let us know if it needs a prune or doesn't look healthy. We'll also provide you with some useful tips to help care for your suburb's new greenery.

Apply for this program

Residents of Warrawong, Port Kembla and Primbee can apply for this program until Monday 26 October 2026.
